CAT Exam Pattern

CAT Revised Pattern:

The medium of test is English language for all candidates. The test has 100 multiple choice questions:

Duration of Exam:
  • The duration of exam will be 03 hours only. In 2013, the sections were time bound for 70 minutes and the total time was 140 minutes. In 2014, the time increased by 30 minutes.
  • All candidates will start test at same time. Candidates are to remain at their seats for the entire duration of the test even if they complete their test early. The Submit button will be enabled only upon completion of test time.

CAT Marking Scheme:

There is Negative Marking in Common Admission Test. Negative marking is a most important feature of CAT scoring process. Each & every question takes 3 marks. Every wrong answers, there is a fine of 1 mark & 1 mark will be deducted. There is no penalty for questions that are left unanswered.

Sections Covered:
  • In this exam there are two sections such as Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability, Logical Reasoning.
  • Quantitative Aptitude (QA) consist 28 questions and Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VRC) consists of 44 questions and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning consists of 28 questions.
  • The Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation section questions will be on mathematics, arithmetic, geometry, mensuration etc.
  • Data Interpretation segment consists questions on Graphs, Charts etc. Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning questions are on English Language Skills and ability to understand.

Type of Examination:

Common Admission Test is totally a computer based multiple choice objective type paper. The aspirants crack this exam through assigned computer systems at the selected test centres. Every question includes 4 choices. Candidates have to choose right option among the 4.

CAT Admission will be done on basis of their performance in Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI). Performance in Common Admission Test is an important component in the admission process.
