Civil services examination comprises two stages:
  • Civil services (preliminary) examination: Under this examination questions are objective type and it is conducted for the selection of candidates for the main examination
  • Civil services (main) examination: Under this examination written and interview is conducted for the selection of candidates for the various services and posts.

  • The Preliminary Examination will consist of two papers of Objective type (multiple choice questions)
  • It will carry a maximum of 400 marks in the subjects set out in sub—section (A) of Section II.
  • This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only.
  • The Question Paper will be set both in Hindi and English
Is there any Negative Marking in Prelims?
  • Yes, there will be a negative marking in prelims if you give a wrong answer of question. If you give an incorrect answer there will be deduction of one third of marks assigned to that question.
  • If you give a more than on answer it will treat as a wrong answer and there will be a penalty as above for that question.

  • The papers on Indian Languages and English ( Paper A and Paper B) will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will of qualifying nature.
  • The main exam consists of two papers one is qualifying in nature and other one is counted for merit.
  • The paper A on Indian Language will not , however, be compulsory for candidates belonging to the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
  • Marks obtained for all the compulsory papers (Paper–Ito Paper-VII) will be counted for ranking.

Interview Test:
  • Contenders, who have declared qualified in UPSC Preliminary or Mains examination, are called to attend interview rounds.
  • It is the final round to select application for particular posts and the interview session will be of 275 marks.
  • The candidates will be interviewed by a board. Questions will be asked in Interview will be on General Interest. The main aim of the Interview is to check the suitability of candidates.
  • The board members are interested to ask questions which is based on topics of Current Affairs and the Subjects in written Examinations.
