As per CDS Eligibility Criteria, aspirant should be a
  • A citizen of India, OR
  • A subject of Nepal, OR
  • A subject of Bhutan, OR
  • A refugee from Tibet who came to India before 1st July 1962 for permanent settlement in India
  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with intention of permanently settling in India.

CDS Education Criteria:

CDS Qualification
Air Force Academy
Candidates should possess 12th standard form Physics and Mathematics along with a degree from recognized university or bachelor degree in engineering /technology.
Women candidates can not apply for Air force academy.
Indian Military Academy
Aspirants must have a degree from recognized university.
Indian Naval Academy
Must have engineering degree from any recognized university or institute
Officers Training Academy
All other men candidates as well as women candidates applying for Officers training academy should possess Degree from any recognized university or institute

Age Limit
Air Force Academy
Should not be less than 20 & not more than 24 Years as on 01st July 2018 (not earlier than 02nd July 1998 and not later than 01st July 1998)
Upto 26 yrs for current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India)
Indian Military Academy
Should not be less than 19 & not more than 24 Years (not earlier than 02nd July 1994 and not later than 01st July 1999)
Indian Naval Academy         
Should not be less than 19 & not more than 22 Years (not earlier than 02nd July 1994 and not later than 01st July 1999)
Officers Training Academy
Should not be less than 19 & not more than 25 Years (not born earlier than 02nd July 1993 and later than 01st July 1999)

CDS Marital Status:
  • For Indian Military Academy (IMA): Unmarried
  • For Indian Naval Academy (NA): Unmarried
  • For Air Force Academy (AFA): Unmarried
  • For Officers Training Academy (OTA - Men): Unmarried and Married
  • For Officers Training Academy (OTA - Women, Non-Technical): Unmarried / Widow/ not remarried / issueless divorces
Physical Standards:

According to CDS Eligibility Criteria, aspirants have to be physically fit as per physical standards for admission in Combined Defense Services Examination.
  • Candidates must be the strong structure and don’t have bodily defects or over weight.
  • Male candidates should possess the mini height as for Army, 157.5 cm.; for Navy 157 cm and for Air Force 162.5 cms.
  • The minimum height for women candidates is 152 cm.
  • Those, who belong to Gorkhas, hills of North-Eastern region of India, Garhwali and Kumaon will get relaxation in age of 5 cm and for Lakshadweep candidates, relaxation is 2cms.

Facts to know about CDS:

Combined Defense Services Exam is conducted twice in a year by Union Public Service Commission for the recruitment of eligible candidates for Military Academy, Indian Air Force, Officers Training Academy and Indian Naval Academy.  The Notification for exam is generally issued in months of October and June, and examinations are conducted in February and November respectively.
Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for exam. There are two exams of Combined Defense Services. Candidates, who will qualify the CDS-I exam, they will be allowed to attend the CDS-II exam. Successful aspirants are admitted into particular Academies after an interview conducted by Services Selection Board.
