Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering is a computer based test (CBT) which is going to be conducted in first week of February 2018 (Saturdays & Sundays) by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati and seven zonal IITs/ IISc on rotation basis in order to provide admission in various post-graduate education programs such as M.E., M. Tech, Direct Ph. D programmes in IITs, NITs, GFTI and various private institutions. These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.

They are objective in nature with a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).
The answer for these questions is a real number

There will be no choices given for these questions
Candidates must key in the answer using the virtual keypad (The keyboard of the computer will be disabled).

For XE Paper:

Aspirants appearing XE paper has to attempt the following sections:

Section A:
  • Engineering Mathematics (compulsory section): It comprise of 11 questions (7 questions of 1 mark and 4 questions of 2 marks).
  • GA – General Aptitude
  • Any two of XE sections B to H: These sections comprise of 22 questions (9 questions carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks).

For GG Paper:
  • Question paper includes two parts i.e. Part A and Part B.
  • Part A is common for all aspirants while Part B has 2 sections, from which Section-1 is of Geology and Section-2 is of Geophysics.
  • In Part A, there are total 25 questions of 1 mark each where as in Part B there are 30 questions of 2 marks each.
  • General Aptitude (GA) is common section in each paper of Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering.
Marking Scheme:
  • Negative marking will be done in GATE for multiple choice questions.
  • For Numerical answer type questions, there is no negative marking.
  • For 1-mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted for any wrong answer.
  • For 2 marks question, 2/3 marks will be deducted.

Design of Questions in the GATE 2018 Paper:
  • Recall: Based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper
  • Comprehension: These questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field
  • Application: Candidate is expected to apply his knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning
  • Analysis and synthesis: Candidate has to present with data, diagrams, images etc.
