Once again a woman has topped the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Exam. Nandini KR from Kolar District of Karnataka made her parents and her teachers proud by making her name in IAS Topper list of 2017. She is currently undergoing through training for Indian Revenue Service (IRS) at National Academy of Customs, Narcotics and Excise in Faridabad. Let’s check the marks obtained by her and what were her strategies for the Civil Services Examination.

Struggle of 2017 IAS Topper

Nandini had done her graduation from MS Ramaiah Institue of Technology, Bengaluru and worked as an engineer in PWD department of Karnataka. She was finally selected for IRS after the second attempt in 2014. After that in 2015, she reappeared for the exam with a dream to become IAS officer but due to illness she could not crack the Pre exam.

Life Events of Nandini

She was born in Karnataka and her father is currently works as a teacher in a government school. Nandini belongs to OBC category and she loves to read books and playing volleyball in her free time. She had a dream to become an IAS Officer and do something for the welfare of the women empowerment and education.

Nandini KR “IAS 2017 Topper” took coaching from Vajiram and Ravi and for better preparation she had taken offline course Insights in Bangalore. She had chosen Kannada Literature as her option subject in Civil Services Mains Exam and crack the UPSC Exam with 55.3% in her fourth attempt. With 54.5% Anmol Sher Singh Bedi holds the second position and G Ronanki gets the third position with 54.37%.

Strategies and Preparation Tips of IAS Topper 2017

Nandini KR gets success in her fourth attempt and for this she made lots of strategies and plans. In 2013, she took the exam without the proper guidance for the first time and missed prelims cutoff by near margin. Then she started her preparation with reading of basic books, NCERTS, newspaper for the second attempt. She had chosen Kannada Literature as an optional subject and tuned her strategies accordingly to the needs of CSE.

But because of compromise in preparation plans and no writing practice, she again failed to qualify the exam. After that she started on her writing skills correcting her past mistakes, learning to write within time limits. In 2015, due to illness she was unable to crack the pre exam. But this attempt gifted her beautiful life lessons in the form of principle of Equanimity- taking success and failure equally. It made her realize that Failure is nothing but a First Attempt in Learning.

After losing thrice, she did not lose her hops. Her friend suggested her to go to Bangalore and prepare under the guidance of Insights. Then under the guidance of insights she starts her preparation. She utilized the knowledge of culture, medieval Indian history, and her optional (Kannada literature) subjects. She makes a good command on her writing skills by practicing more and more essays.
Some preparation tips suggested by the IAS 2017 Topper are available below:
  • 8 hours of sleep 1 hour of sports and 5 minutes break in between.
  • Before the exam, one should prepare a time table which suits you the best.
  • Set some daily or weekly targets and work according to it.
  • Cover the important topics from Pre and Mains syllabus.
  • In examination, use paragraphs, flowcharts and bullet points as per the need of the question.
  • Explain your answer through diagram also.
  • Use facts and figures to justify your answers.
  • Always revise your answer sheet in last 20-25 minutes.

Aspirants first go through Prelims exam and after that those who have the potential to clear the exam will qualify for the Mains exam. Those candidates who crack the main exam will be short-list for the interview round.
