On the day of Ganpati Visarjan, the Idol of Shri Ganesh are immersed in a river or sea. According to the Hindu Rituals you must do these things while Ganpati Visarjan:

1.    Uttarpuja (Uttaravahan)

This worship should be done before immersing the Idol of Shri Ganesh in river or sea. The worship should be done with the reading of specific mantras like Achaman, Sankalpa etc. After that, Ganesh Aarti should be performed and each person of family should put akshata onto Shri Ganesh’s hand and shift the Idol a little with the right hand. The purppose of Uttarpuja is that the performer of the puja should get gifted with Ganapati blessings to the maximum. The final uttarpuja is the last step in enlarging the incorporation of these blessings.

2.    Visarjan

After the completion of the Uttarpuja, the Idol is immersed in running water of river or sea. The curd, puffed rice, coconut, modak etc should be offered to Ganapati Idol (at the time of immersion) as provision for the journey. Aarti and chant (‘Ganpati Bappa Moriya, Mangal Murti Moriya’) should be done beside the resource of water planned for immersion and after that the Idol immersed along with the requirements into the running water. After immersion, it is traditional to carry home some soil from the place of immersion and spray it around the house.

The time of farewell to Ganapati Idol is a heartrending moment in itself. All the family members should perform this prayer at the time of immersion:

Mushikavaahana modaka hastha,
Chaamara karna vilambitha sutra,
Vaamana rupa maheshwara putra,
Vighna vinaayaka paada Namaste.

Everybody should ask for his Forgiveness for any faults committed by them. If family members plan to bring the idol next year on Ganesh Chaturthi then thay should invite him and ask him to return next year.
